Connect your Quad Cortex mini
- Power the mini with its own power supply and connect it to your iPad using a data-capable USB connection.
- Enable MIDI Over USB on the mini. Keep MIDI Thru off for the direct connection to avoid message loops.
- Open the app’s Connection settings. Select the mini’s MIDI output destination to send commands, and its input source to receive messages. Match the MIDI channels.
- Use Settings → Help → Connection & feedback setup for guided setup. If no device is connected, Try Demo lets you explore without sending hardware MIDI.
Cortex Remote currently requires iPadOS 26.0 or later. USB audio working does not by itself confirm that MIDI is configured.
The mini changes, but the app does not
The mini’s incoming MIDI commands and outgoing reports are separate. Enable clock output to follow its MIDI clock. Preset, scene and expression following requires the corresponding MIDI Out assignments on the mini and matching enabled input mappings in the app. Configure your frequently used presets first.
Check the selected input, channel and Follow options. Use Activity to see incoming messages. Physical mode changes or unconfigured actions may not be reported. Sent means the app submitted a command; it is not acknowledgement from the mini.
Controls are unavailable
Confirm the output is connected, the app is active and Demo is off for real hardware control. If editing is locked, hold the header lock for one second to unlock. Stomp also needs the intended mode applied and matching mode-slot assignments. Some controls remain unknown until a command is sent or a configured report is received.
Names, layout and Favorites
Use the pencil buttons or Settings → Names to edit local labels. These names do not rename anything on the mini. Use Settings → Layout & arrangement to show or hide panels, or hold a panel heading to arrange them. Favorites are managed in Settings and can be enabled as a panel.
Device profiles
The updated app offers separate Quad Cortex mini and Quad Cortex profiles in Connection. Original Quad Cortex is Demo only — hardware validation pending. Live MIDI control remains available for mini. Names, Favorites, layout and MIDI settings are independent; exports contain only the active profile.
Edit names on your computer
Open the Names Editor, load an exported version-3 or version-4 app backup or start blank, and edit names in tables. You can paste rectangular blocks from a spreadsheet and save a local browser draft. Download the full JSON, transfer it to your iPad using Files or iCloud Drive, then import it in Settings.
Current editor downloads and selective name import require the updated app; the original approved beta does not support this workflow. In a compatible updated app, choose Apply edited names only. Conflicting names can be reviewed individually; other settings remain unchanged. New device profiles and blank files require the updated app. Version-3 backups belong to Quad Cortex mini. Starting blank and performing a full restore also replaces settings with defaults. The editor supports English, Korean, Japanese and German.
Tempo and returning from another app
Tap the central BPM control to send a manual tap, or hold it to enter a target BPM. Entered targets are sent as four timed CC44 taps, not as a numeric device-tempo command. Received MIDI clock and local estimates are labeled separately.
The app pauses pending work when inactive and never replays cancelled commands on return. Reload a configured preset on the mini if fresh reported context is needed. Sheet music remains in your separate app.
Back up before troubleshooting
Use Settings → Export settings to save a JSON backup. Import previews changes before replacement and may require reconnecting local MIDI endpoints. Backups contain local labels and configuration; share them only when needed.
Send a useful issue report
- App version, iPad model and iPadOS version.
- Mini firmware version and your cable or hub setup.
- What you expected, what happened and steps to reproduce it.
- A screenshot or video if helpful; remove information you do not want to share.
Optional: open Settings → Advanced settings → Diagnostics, review the report, then share it by email. Endpoint names are excluded by default. Do not send full settings backups unless needed and reviewed.
You can replay the guided tour from Settings → Quick tutorial. App interface languages: English, Korean, Japanese and German. This website is available in English and Korean.
